The Power of Fragrance

The Power of Fragrance

As the founder and creative director of Atenai London, scent has a special place in my heart and one that I think should be explored by people worldwide.

On a series of articles, I will be exploring the different facets of fragrance, personal care products, as well as active ingredients that body washes, hand creams, lotions and other products have, why Atenai London exist and why I created it,

We will explore the manufacturing of them and what me, as the creative director of the brand and founder, actually look for when creating and writing a brief that can be picked up by the perfumers as well as skincare manufacturers and deliver something truly special.

For me the start of Atenai London was about tackling a gap in the market for a brand that could provide a whole range of products that could have the same fragrance throughout.

However, the first article has to be about fragrance, scent and why it is so important for all of us.

The science behind scent and how scents influence people

Fragrance is a strong and often overlooked force in our daily lives. From the citrus smell of lemon or oranges, the freshly made morning coffee or the soothing aroma of rose, Jasmine or frankincense, scents can evoke emotions, trigger memories, and even influence behaviour.

The science of scent is deeply intertwined with our biology, psychology, and culture, making it a fascinating area for exploration.

To determine why scent is so important I did some research and came across an interesting article that I read from the Harvard Gazette on this same topic, https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/02/how-scent-emotion-and-memory-are-intertwined-and-exploited/

At the core of the power of fragrance lies our sense of smell.

When we breathe, fragrance molecules travel through the nostrils to the olfactory bulb, a brain organ closely associated with areas responsible for emotion and memory, such as the amygdala and hippocampus.

This connection is what explains how some scents instantly transport us back in time to a specific moment or trigger intense emotions.

In contrast to our other senses, the sense of smell does not go through the thalamus, the sensory relay station of the brain, and instead goes directly to the limbic system. This special wiring makes smell a direct and bodily experience, affecting our mood, perception, and even physiological reactions.

Another interesting book that can be read about it, is by the author Luca Turin, one of the most reputable Scientist and Perfume Critics worldwide who wrote "The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell," which explores the complexities of the sense of smell and his vibrational theory. Well worth reading.

Emotional impact of fragrance

Scents have a profound ability to influence emotions. A whiff of citrus such as bergamot or orange zest that we use on our Oasis Fragrance, might energize and uplift, orange blossom and cedarwood can evoke comfort and warmth as felt on our Blossom Fragrance, while frankincense and rose as we use in our Sanctuary Fragrance can evoke nourishment and uplifting.

However more than that, scent can be felt and appreciated throughout any event or occasion, as well as a deep cultural meaning, making it the ideal platform to explore life at its finest as it provides the canvas for what life brings.

In one culture, incense is used in religious ceremonies to purify spaces and invite gods. In another culture, certain odours are associated with celebratory events, mourning, or initiation rituals. Scent selection is also a form of personal expression, allowing the individual to convey elements of self.

Last but certainly not least fragrance also plays a significant role in attraction.

Studies show that pheromones—chemical signals we unconsciously detect through scent—can subtly influence our feelings of connection to others. Perfumes like Sanctuary, Oasis or Blossom that we have created are crafted not only to smell pleasant but also to evoke confidence, allure, and individuality as well as a sense of self belief in oneself.

Memory and scent

The link between memory and smell cannot be denied.

A fleeting odour can evoke memories of childhood, bring back loved ones, or bring back moments we thought were lost.

This phenomenon, also known as the "Proustian memory effect," highlights the powerful role of scent in our personal narratives.

Businesses also leverage this connection through "scent marketing." Retail stores, hotels, and even airlines use specific fragrances to create memorable brand experiences. The smell of fresh flowers or a Sanctuary Reed Diffuser in a real estate showing or the signature scent in a luxury hotel can leave a lasting impression on customers.

That is where obviously we excel, our products at Atenai London are the perfect example of scents that can enhance an ambient or of course one’s own life by creating the scent from where a memory can arise from.

That is the beauty of our brand and what we offer.

The future and power of fragrance

As science and technology advance, the potential applications of scent continue to grow. Innovations in synthetic biology allow for the creation of new, sustainable fragrances, something we try to take advantage of, in order to expand our sustainability efforts and maintain a high standard all year round.

We at Atenai London keep pushing the boundaries alongside our partners to try and improve as well as provide something truly unique and precious to our consumers and the market as a whole.

Fragrance is far more than a luxury; it is a powerful tool that shapes our emotions, memories, and interactions.

Whether through a favourite perfume, the smell of home, or the aroma of nature, scent enriches our lives in countless ways.

I believe fragrance is a powerful tool for transformation—awakening the senses, enhancing well-being, and bringing balance to everyday moments. All our products are infused with our signature scents. Scents that will, in its own right, provide the backdrop to your life and your memories.

On my next article I will be talking about Atenai London and why it was created.
